In areas with hard municipal water — where incoming fill water already carries 300 ppm or more of dissolved calcium — scale buildup is virtually inevitable without active chemistry management. Keeping calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm and pH solidly below 7.6 are the two most effective chemical strategies for slowing scale accumulation, but even perfect chemistry will not eliminate it entirely in hard-water regions.

Light Scale Removal: DIY Methods That Work

If your tile has a thin, recently formed calcium haze, you can often remove it with a pumice stone and some elbow grease. Pumice works on traditional ceramic and porcelain tile as well as plaster surfaces, but it will scratch glass tile, polished marble, and certain natural stone finishes. Always test in an inconspicuous spot first. Work the pumice wet, with gentle circular motions, and the calcium will come away as a white paste. For grout lines specifically, an old toothbrush and a paste made from baking soda and water handles light deposits without affecting grout color or integrity.

A mild muriatic acid wash is the next step up. Mix one part muriatic acid to ten parts water (always add acid to water, never the reverse), apply with a spray bottle or acid-resistant brush, let it fizz for 30 seconds to a minute, and rinse thoroughly. Wear eye protection, rubber gloves, and work in a well-ventilated area. Heavy Scale Removal: When to Call a Professional

When calcium deposits have been building for years and have hardened into thick, layite-like formations, DIY methods will only scratch the surface — literally. Glass bead blasting is the gentler option, using fine glass microspheres propelled by compressed air to chip away deposits while leaving the tile glaze intact. Soda blasting uses sodium bicarbonate particles and is effective on both tile and exposed aggregate surfaces.

Professional cleaning typically runs between four and eight dollars per linear foot of tile, depending on severity and access. For a standard 15-by-30-foot pool, expect a total bill between $350 and $700 for a thorough cleaning. This cost looks a lot better than retiling — a project that can run $5,000 to $15,000 depending on the tile selected and the scope of the work.

Maintaining Grout Between Tiles

Grout deterioration is both a cosmetic and structural concern. Cracked, crumbling, or missing grout allows water to penetrate behind the tile and weaken the bond between tile and the pool shell or beam. In freeze-thaw climates, trapped water behind tile expands and pops tiles off the wall entirely. Inspect your grout lines at least once a year and repoint any areas where grout has eroded below the tile surface. Use a pool-rated epoxy grout for repairs — standard cement-based grout will not hold up in a constantly submerged, chemically treated environment.
