Green Pool Water Recovery: How to Kill Algae and Restore Clarity

You walk out to the backyard and your pool looks like a swamp. The water is green, murky, and the bottom has disappeared from view. Before you panic and consider draining the whole thing, understand that green pool water is one of the most common problems pool owners face — and with the right approach, you can recover crystal-clear water in three to five days without emptying a single gallon. The green color comes from suspended algae cells multiplying in water where sanitizer levels dropped below the threshold needed to keep them in check.

Identifying What Type of Algae You Have

Not all pool algae are created equal, and the type you are dealing with determines how aggressive your treatment needs to be. Green algae is the most common and the easiest to kill — it is the variety responsible for that classic swampy appearance, and it floats freely in the water column. Yellow or mustard algae is more stubborn; it clings to walls and shaded surfaces and often looks like sand or pollen deposits. Black algae is the most difficult to eradicate because it sends root structures into plaster and grout, making surface brushing essential alongside chemical treatment.

Step One: Test and Adjust pH Before Shocking

This is the step most people skip — and it is the reason most first attempts at clearing green water fail. Chlorine’s killing power is directly tied to pH. At a pH of 7.2, about 63 percent of your chlorine is in its active form (hypochlorous acid). At a pH of 8.0, that drops to roughly 21 percent. Shocking a pool with high pH is like throwing money into green water — literally. Test your pH and bring it down to 7.2 before adding any shock. Use muriatic acid or dry acid (sodium bisulfate) to lower pH, adding it to the deep end with the pump running and retesting after 30 minutes of circulation.

Step Two: Superchlorinate Aggressively

Forget the label dose on the shock bag — a green pool needs overwhelming force. Your target is a free chlorine level of 30 ppm or higher for a severe bloom. For a mild green tint, 20 ppm may suffice. Use calcium hypochlorite (cal-hypo) shock for the fastest results, pre-dissolving each pound in a bucket of water before broadcasting it across the pool surface. Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) is another solid option that does not add calcium to the water, making it a better choice if your calcium hardness is already high.

Perform the shock treatment at dusk. Sunlight degrades unstabilized chlorine rapidly, and you need those high levels sustained overnight to kill the algae colony. Run your pump and filter continuously — 24 hours a day — until the water clears. This is non-negotiable. Stagnant water and working algae is a fight you will lose every time.

Step Three: Brush, Filter, and Repeat

After shocking, brush every surface of the pool — walls, floor, steps, behind ladders, and around fittings. Algae that clings to surfaces is shielded from chlorine by a biofilm layer, and physical brushing breaks that shield so the chemical can penetrate. Use a stainless steel bristle brush on plaster and concrete surfaces, and a nylon brush on vinyl liners and fiberglass shells. Brush at least once per day for the first three days after shocking.

Your filter will take a beating during this process. Backwash sand and DE filters every eight to twelve hours, and rinse cartridge filters every six to eight hours during the recovery period. The dead algae has to go somewhere, and your filter media will load up fast. If your filter pressure climbs back to its high mark within a few hours of cleaning, that is actually a good sign — it means the filter is catching dead algae cells efficiently.

Preventing the Next Algae Outbreak

Once you have clear water again, the goal shifts to making sure you never repeat the experience. Maintain free chlorine between 2 and 4 ppm at all times. Keep your cyanuric acid level in the 30–50 ppm range (or 70–80 for saltwater pools). Run your filter at least eight hours per day during swimming season, and longer during heat waves when algae growth accelerates. Finally, do not overlook physical maintenance. Keep leaves and organic debris out of the pool with regular skimming, and make sure your pool cleaning schedule includes brushing walls and steps weekly — not just vacuuming the floor. Algae colonies start small in corners and crevices where water circulation is weakest, and catching them early with a brush takes five minutes instead of five days of chemical warfare.
